Charter requirements & logistics

Cuisine & Provisioning
On Sardinia, feast on pane carasau, Cannonau wine, bottarga, pecorino cheese, and proceddu (roast suckling pig). In Corsica, treat yourself to brocciu cheese, charcuterie, chestnuts, and wild boar. Provisioning is available in Olbia, Porto Cervo, Ajaccio, and Bonifacio.

Culture & Heritage
Sardinia is recognized for its strong regional identity, and its history is on display at Phoenician ruins and ancient nuraghi (Bronze Age towers). Corsica is respected as Napoleon’s birthplace and displays its fierce independence while celebrating French and Italian cultural influences. In Corsica, explore the famed Genoese towers and menhir statues.

Navigation Conditions
Strong currents and Mistral winds create rough sailing conditions across the Straits of Bonifacio. Calmer waters are enjoyed near the coasts, and several gorgeous anchorages offer sanctuary. With rocky coastlines, careful navigation is essential.

Regulatory Requirements
The Italian VAT of 22% applies in Sardinia, while Corsica imposes the French VAT of 20%. Customs clearance is required when passing between Italy and France. The APA ranges between 30% and 35%. Understand and follow marine park regulations.

Currency & Payments
Both islands use the Euro (EUR). Credit card payments at major establishments are available, but bring cash for beach vendors and purchases in smaller towns.

Language
The primary languages in Sardinia are Sardinian and Italian. In Corsica, the primary languages are Corsican and French. Marinas and tourist areas also often use English.

Access & Transportation
Air transportation is available via the Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) and Cagliari (CAG) in Sardinia. In Corsica, the main airports are Ajaccio (AJA) and Figari (FSC) in Corsica. Travel to and from mainland Italy and France is also available via ferry service.

Marinas & Berthing
Marina and berthing reservations for Costa Smeralda are necessary well in advance during the summer months. Porto Cervo is recognized for its world-class superyacht marina. Other top destinations are Marina di Olbia, Portisco in Sardinia, Port Tino Rossi in Ajaccio, and Bonifacio harbor in Corsica.

Premier Anchorages
Premier anchorage on Sardinia is available at La Maddalena, Cala Coticcio, and Spargi. On the east coast of Sardinia, anchor at Cala Luna or Cala Goloritzé. On Corsica, consider Îles Lavezzi, Cala di Roccapina, Palombaggia, and Rondinara.
Insider tips
Expert recommendations for Sardinia & Corsica
Check weather conditions before navigating the Straits of Bonifacio. Likewise, the narrow Bonifacio harbor requires extra attention when entering and exiting. While Costa Smeralda is among the priciest anchorage sites, the cost is recouped through fabulous yacht-watching. Before visiting, be aware that Sardinia is the more developed of the two islands. The famed pink beach at Maddalena is a protected area that can only be viewed by boat. A “must” at local markets is charcuterie with local cheeses. When selecting a season for your visit, plan for Porto Cervo’s peak social season in August.
